In Sanskrit ‘parivrtta’ means ‘to turn around to twist’. ‘Parivrtta’ is the word used before the name of the pose, it would mean the torso twists in either standing. The meaning of ‘parsva’ = ‘side or flank’ ‘parivrtta parsvakonasana’ = ‘Revolved Side’ ‘kona’ = ‘angle’ ‘asana’ = ‘pose or posture’. It is part of Ashtanga Yoga. It is forming part of the sequence of standing poses. This pose works with the hips, the side of the back, the shoulders, and the entire abdominal area.

1. Stand in a straight position with your feet together. 2. When you align your neck with your spine, your arms will rest beside your body. 3. Now lift one leg, say the right as put it forward, quite a few steps ahead so that you feel a soft stretch. 4. Now slowly bend the leg down all the way, you leaning forward in the bargain, and don’t stop until your thighs are parallel to the ground. 5. Your foot should be now aligned with your knee joint and the left leg should be stretched in the back, straight and rigid. 6. Now bend forward and twist to the right-left side if you have the right foot bent. 7. Make sure your upper body is twisted to its full extent facing the side now. 8. After this take a deep inhale and lock it as you bring your right arm down touching the ground with the left arm swayed above your head causing a slight chest stretch. 9. You can fold your hands into a prayer pose. 10. Hold this position for a few seconds.
